I did think about getting them a real digital camera but I also wanted to rubber protection the kids ones have.   We previously used the VTech - Kidizoom Digital Camera, which is about comparable to the Playskool one in terms of functionality (though our Vtech has a flash and the Playskool does not), picture quality (both are pretty 'awful' even with bright daylight) and durability (though I think the Vtech edges this one out). The pictures can be "enhanced" with different cartoon shapes or funny distortion and put into a slide show. This unit also has a little flash (LED light). Picture quality is so-so but adequate and my daughter has a lot of fun with it nonetheless. After one solid week of using it, taking a hundred+ pictures, viewing, and deleting them, the batteries (4x AA) finally gave out. I will probably add a micro SD card to it so she can keep a bunch on the camera for viewing. The camera also has a USB port and cable for downloading to a computer. Misc	The good: The pen is amazing, a real marvel of teaching technology. The kids like it. The bad: It's the most techno-savvy leapfrog product yet. The pen needs to be connected to the computer a lot as your child learns. Not only do you have to "download" the books onto the pen, but there is a feedback loop where the child earns rewards. Most of the "rewards" require printer paper and ink. I wish you could turn off the pen's requests to be plugged back into the computer, but you can't. Should you buy it: If you are used to performing regular "maintenance" with your ipod, and you don't mind that, then definitely buy it. Misc	The good: The pen is amazing, a real marvel of teaching technology. The kids like it. The bad: It's the most techno-savvy leapfrog product yet. The pen needs to be connected to the computer a lot as your child learns. Not only do you have to "download" the books onto the pen, but there is a feedback loop where the child earns rewards. Most of the "rewards" require printer paper and ink. I wish you could turn off the pen's requests to be plugged back into the computer, but you can't. Should you buy it: If you are used to performing regular "maintenance" with your ipod, and you don't mind that, then definitely buy it.
